Say yes to everything in your new job
One of my candidates impressed me recently with their fantastic attitude towards starting a new role with a commercial agency. He said ‘I’m going to say yes to everything in my new job in the first few months.’
He went on to explain the sorts of things he’ll say yes to, which included:
- filling in for a colleague on annual leave
- attending a training session
- giving a presentation
- joining a conference call
- attending a networking function
- staying back late.
The aim of his approach was to learn new skills, overcome some personal shyness, get to know everyone and give a positive impression to his colleagues.
I think this is a fantastic attitude to adopt and is something everyone should consider when starting in a new job. Experience is a highly valuable asset and the more experience you have, the more valuable you will become.
This mind-set doesn’t only apply to new jobs though. Try saying yes for a few months in an existing role to invigorate your attitude, see what new things you can learn and what doors it will open.
Of course there will be times when you need to say no and it is important to listen to your instincts and recognise when you might feel uncomfortable saying yes. Just make sure that the reason isn’t because you’re being pushed out of your comfort zone to do something new.
So try saying yes more often – you will gain valuable experience and reap long-term career rewards.
